Port-Gentil, situated on an island off Gabon, currently exports some 80,000 tons of crude oil monthly , which is five times the amount it exported when the first shipment was made in 1957. Oil was discovered here in 1956 and the following year shipments were started. Today, there are five pumping stations on the island of Port-Gentil.
