Headline Sir Alexander MacFarquhar

Caption Description Portrait of Sir Alexander MacFarquhar, Director of the United Nations Office of Personnel. Prior to his appointment to this post on 1 May 1962, Sir Alexander was Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Civilian Assistance to the Republic of the Congo (1960-1962). Previously, he had been Resident Representative of the Technical Assistance Board for Pakistan (1952-1954) and TAB Regional Representative, with headquarters in Bangkok (1955-1960). Sir Alexander is a native of Scotland. He studied at Aberdeen University, where he received the degree of Master of Arts, and at Cambridge University. He entered the Indian Civil Service in 1926, becoming Deputy Secretary to the Government of India in 1941; Deputy Director-General to the Directorate-General of Supply in the Government of India in 1943; and Director-General of Disposals in 1946. In 1947 he was named Commerce and Education Secretary by the Government of Pakistan, in which capacity he served until 1951.
