Headline Delegates to ECAFE Session Visit Bokaro Coal Field
Caption Description A Group of delegates to the week-long session of the Subcommittee on Mineral Resources of the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) which concluded in Calcutta on 16 November took advantage of their presence in India to visit the Bokaro coal field in the Hazaribagh district (Bihar).
Some of the group at the Bhaladih sand-gathering station, part of the equipment for stowing sand as a protection against spontaneous combustion and potential emissions of fire damp from goaves. Sand is collected from river-beds near coalfields by hand, drag scrapers or by pumping. Clean sand is delivered by conveyor belt (at right) into bunker. During the journey, the wet sand loses much of its water by gravity and vibration.
