Headline The New Headquarters Building of the UPU

Caption Description To accommodate the expansion of its activities and as a result of the adhesion of many newly independent countries and the tasks assigned to the International Bureau, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) has moved into a new Headquarters in Bern. On 20 May 1970 the new UPU building, situated in the district of Oberes Murifeld, was inaugurated. Financing for the construction of the building, begun in 1968, was made possible through various loans from the Canton and the City of Bern as well as a loan from the Swiss Confederation. The Swiss PTT also financed the construction of the post office annexed to the building. Several UPU member nations contributed towards the equipment and decorations. The new Headquarters consists of the two buildings connected at different levels; one is for offices and the other for conference rooms. The building plans were executed by the Architects H. Daxelhofer and H. Andres, of Bern.
