Headline Pakistani Paintings Formally Presented to United Nations
Caption Description A gift from the Government of Pakistan – three paintings by the artist Chughtai, who is considered the most outstanding contemporary painter of that country – was presented to the United Nations today.
Here is a view of the ceremony, which took place at the entrance to the Delegates’ Dining Room, where the paintings are hung. The paintings were presented by Professor Ahmed S. Bokhari (left), Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, who expressed his pleasure at making the presentation, and accepted by Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld (at the microphone), who declared that it was good for the West to keep in close touch with the East and its basic fine culture, a contact which was lost during the early history of Europe.
The three paintings are entitled: “Two Women,” “Jehangir and Nur Jehan,” and “The Sultan and the Saint.” One of them is seen in this picture.
